Floating the Portneuf had to be one of the highlights of the year I was an Adventurer! It was a lot of fun, and I learned more about the river than any other day.
This was my favorite part of the week! Love the macros, the fish, the float, this entire day rocked! Make my wife's day and bring home at least one piece of garbage on the float!
Here's a photo of electrofishing today. The person in the middle, Dr. Ernest Keeley from ISU, is carrying a backpack with a battery in it. The yellow pole he is holding has an electrode at the end. Current flows through the water and zaps the fish, temporarily stunning them. They float to the top, and the others in the water scoop them up so they can be studied. They soon recover, and we put them back in the water. Hope that helps.
I would like to be able to use this tool during the spring months with my 7th grade Life Science students. We study canal water and it is often difficult to gather live specimans. Is there a source to buy or rent this tool?
I think Fish and Game would have something to say about people renting electrofishing gear! You have to get special permits for this. Your best bet would be to contact Dr. Ernest Keeley at ISU--he is the person who showed us how to do it. (He also has grad students who might be willing to demonstrate.)
I can imagine how eye opening the on-site work is for everyone. Spending time in the middle of it all is the best way to learn and find out what you want to learn more about. This is like looking at pictures of someone's vacation and wishing you were there.
