That was one of my favorite parts of the trip last year! This year I want to have someone from ISU come help my studens look at some river life. I will be in contact with you on how to go about it. I think going to the river might be hard with 100 plus students, but bringing in some samples to view would be almost as amazing.
No way- a mayfly?! That's awesome! I guess the water is better than expected, 'eh! I just googled your location and am pleasently surprised that the river is clean enough to support these high quality water indicators.
As for going to the river with students- I reguraly bring my students to the creek to do physcial & chemical assessements. The key is to first do it in the classroom- you'll blow through lots of pH strips (good use for the expired ones!) and DO tubules, but its worth it so the river experience can be more focused and not a cluster. (BTDT!). But for your numbers (~100!) you'll want more hands-on-deck. That is, see if you can poach some student teachers, practicum teachers, or other adults to help you. Overall the kid are typically pretty good, but keeping them focused can require some proding and help at time. Nevertheless- the experience is well worth it.
We found them in the Portneuf just downstream from Lava. The water was very swift and turbid this year compared to prior outings. The trout were all hiding!
I could have spent all day looking at the samples you collected. I can only imagine the fun a group of kids would have exploring this area. Keep up the good work.
