MILES Project

I think one of the most incredible things about this project is it bridges the gap between our natural resources available and the community. Here, teachers have the opportunity to learn all they can about the history of the Portneuf and our watershed system, along with those indicators that impact the quality of our river. We can then take that information and share it with our students, giving them a real-life purpose for learning about ecology and socio-ecological processes that are all around us and make our community what it is. Last summer, I was able to participate as an adventurer and loved all of the field trips we took, but most of all, I loved learning about my backyard and the area I now call home. I grew up in Utah and didn't know much about Idaho when I moved here. When my husband and I moved to Pocatello, we didn't know anything about the impact the Portneuf has on our everyday lives. I have since learned to love so many things about this area and now truly call it home. This project has opened my eyes to the past of this great river, but also the future with the revisioning project. A day will come when we can fish, float, kayak, and explore the river like it is meant to be. I cannot wait for that moment and appreciate all of the hard work that went into the revisioning project to make our river incredible and healthy again.

I totally agree, Taylor; and
I totally agree, Taylor; and every year I learn a little bit more that I can use to add to my students' experience with their surroundings. It's amazing how excited my 8th graders (at Irving) get when I tell them about revisioning ideas for the Portneuf. Since most of them live in the areas surrounding it through town, they are very enthusiastic about seeing it healthy again.
