It's All About the Water
It is hard to find any ecological service that we are provided that does not revolve around water. Everything on earth, including us is made of water and cannot service without it. With this in mind it is easy to say that water is the ecological service I value the most. Everything I love to do is around water. THere is one aquatic insect, the Mayfly that live the larval stage that takes up to two and one half years under water where it preys on other aquatic insectics, is preyed upon by other insects and is an important food source for fish. If it makes through the larval stage and... more
It's Hot!
I value trees. Sounds simple enough but the exponential value to me is undeniable. As it heats up this summer, trees provide shade that cool off everything around us. We hear about trees converting CO2 into oxygen but a often overlooked benefit is the shade and general cooling they provide to the concrete and blacktop cities we live in. Is it the most important ecosystem service... Probably not, but as it heats up today, it sure feels like the most important one to me. What ecosystem service do you value the most in your watershed and why?
So much to learn!
Greetings fellow educators! I am very excited to have the opportunity to participate in this workshop as a digi-learner. When I learned this past spring that I would be teaching an Aquatic Ecology class this coming year, I knew that I had to take advantage of this awesome experience. Being a transplant from the Midwest, I have been working diligently to understand more about the ecosystems of Idaho and how they are impacted by a variety of human factors. Having grown up in Ohio where moisture abounds, I had never considered sprinkler systems for lawns or irrigation for crops. (Imagine... more
looking forward to a interesting week of Digi Learning
hi My name is Terry Adolfson and I am looking forward to this week as a digi learner not only to learn about our eco system here in the Boise Watershed area, but also from the standpoint of a digi learner as to how I might include a learning experince like this for my students. this is my first time with something like this.
Welcome! The Adventure Begins!
Good morning Digi-Learners! The workshop is off to a great start! Our in-person teachers are getting to know the Boise River Watershed through a mapping exercise. Look for the lesson plan 'Crumple a Paper Watershed' on the Lesson Plan tab. They'll hear from U of I MOSS students what ecosystem services means (the benefits that the ecosystem provides to people) and creating an ecological concept map. After lunch we'll be hearing from climate researchers about how climate change does and will continue to influence our water resources in Idaho. We'll finish with a tour of the Boise... more
New to Idaho and excited to learn more
Hello everyone,
This is my first experience with MILES and only have lived 5 years in Idaho apart from school. I'm really anxious about learning more about the area and what ways we can help our students understand the impact their decisions have on their area. Looking forward to your posts and how much to be learned.
